Janet Hassall art workJanet Hassall has painted for many years in a number of mediums. Over time Janet developed a deep fascination and appreciation for the natural environment, which in later years she expressed on canvas.

In 1988 Janet began using clay as a medium as part of a certificate course in art and design at Mt Gravatt TAFE. Enjoying the challenge of clay, in 1991 Janet completed a Bachelor in Fine Arts at Griffith University, Majoring in Ceramics.

“I have always been fascinated by the timelessness of a beautiful pot but because I am a painter first, I find I am using clay as a canvas on which to paint,” she says.

In this series of slip cast and hand made bottles, the joy of colours in the landscape is shown using the technique of overlaying underglaze colours and drawing on white earthenware clay. The work is then bisque fired and a clear glaze is applied prior to the second firing which enhances the colours of the finished piece.
