Rise: Cooking Up Character
An exhibition by Morley Grainger
17 July - 11 August 2006
Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba
This quirky exhibition provides the viewer with the opportunity to see the humble homemade cake removed from its conventional context. Rise: Cooking Up Character plays homage to women’s skills and experiences of which the cake is a recurring element.
The cake is a universal symbol of celebration. Morley uses it as a means to honour a cross-section of the many cultures that contribute to Australia’s diversity and brings together two of the universal themes of women’s material culture – cakes and textiles.
