What is homestay?
Homestay is providing accommodation, either short term or long term, in a caring and supportive environment for an international student.
What’s required of me?
- Screening to assess the suitability of your home environment. This includes both the family and the family home and is undertaken by homestay coordinators.
- A Blue Card is a legal requirement. For more information go to the website.
- Providing students with their own furnished room.
- Allowing the use of household facilities including family bathroom, kitchen and living areas. Laundering of linen and towels
- Providing breakfast and dinner, as well as lunch when required.
- Speaking English as your main language at home and encouraging English conversation.
- Providing a family atmosphere and treating the student as a member of the family, which includes encouraging them to assist with household chores.
- Providing transport to and from their place of study, if required.
- Respecting and being aware of cultural differences.
What advantages are there in becoming a homestay family?
- Experiencing a rewarding cultural experience.
One homestay family said: “Our student was a pleasure to have in our home and adapted to Australian life easily. A strong bond was formed between our daughter and our student, immediately proving that regardless of race children everywhere are alike. This bond, I’m sure, will last a long time. It was a cultural experience for both sides which we would do again at the drop of a hat.” - Providing a caring environment for a student a long way from home.
- Building lasting relationships with someone from another country and another way of life.
- Having the opportunity to share your home, our wonderful lifestyle, food, customs, climate and language with an international student.
- Most students do pay to live as part of your family. Homestay coordinators will be able to provide you with more information.
