Coochie
Just a few minutes from the mainland’s Victoria Point by passenger ferry or vehicle barge, Coochiemudlo offers visitors a unique island experience.
Step off the boat at Norfolk Beach and explore the sub tropical island, along beaches lapped by the calm waters of Moreton Bay.
At one end, red cliffs give the island its unique name, which literally means ‘red rock’ in the local Aboriginal dialect.
The island is home to a thriving arts community and visitors enjoy browsing through their works at the local galleries, or, five times each year, at the Coochie Markets, in the Flinders Beach foreshore park.
Coochie is 130 hectares in area and just 10-12 minutes by water taxi, ferry or barge from Victoria Point.
For adventurers, an easy walk will have you circumnavigating the island within an hour.
Fishing is a popular pursuit and boaties love to tie up and come ashore at Coochie. Paddle boats are fun on the warmer days and kids love to swim in the waters of Norfolk Beach.
A freshwater swamp and surrounding forest are a birdwatchers dream come true, with migratory wading birds adding to the many species seen each summer.
Walk, cycle or bus around – it won’t take long to know the terrain, and enjoy a wealth of wildlife along the way.
There is a range of accommodation options on Coochie, from holiday bungalows to units and houses. For more info, please contact the Visitor information Centre on
