Main Beach
Main Beach is the most popular swimming and surfing and fishing beach at Straddie.
Stretching for 32 kilometers from Point Lookout to Jumpinpin at the southernmost tip of the island, Main Beach is a vision, disappearing into the distance in a haze where the sand, sea and sky merge on the horizon.
At the Point Lookout end, swimmers flock to the patrolled area of the beach. There’s almost always a wave and on some fine days, the surfing legendary. When a northerly wind blows the sea is often calm and crystal clear, ideal for snorkeling and swimming in the big swells.
Fisherman can be seen wetting a line at the many gutters along the entire beach, with 4WD traffic quite heavy at peak times. You’ll need a permit to drive on the beaches.

Foreshore camping is available in the dunes along certain areas of Main Beach.

Like all the beaches exposed to the southerly offshore winds, Main can be as wild as it’s beautiful. Strong winds and shifting sand cause changing swimming conditions and rips and side currents can be a trap for unwary swimmers. It’s impossible to patrol the entire beach, but with a little care, Main Beach is an explorer’s delight.
