Russell Island
Russell Island is the largest of the southern bay islands, with swimming at several top spots.
For fishing there’s a jetty at the northern end of the island, with a nearby fenced swimming enclosure for cooling off on a hot day. High tide is best for swimming in tidal pools.
This is an ideal spot for picknicking in the foreshore park adjacent to the small beach.
Sandy Beach is also a great spot for fishing or just relaxing on the grass, with nearby picnic tables, barbeque area and toilets.
Adventurers can take a walk around Rocky Point and spot some of the local wildlife.
Stay a day or overnight at the local bed and breakfast or motel. Take a little longer to venture in the freshwater wet heath area of Turtle Swamp, where the trees are home to dozens of species of birds and spring wildflowers are a pleasure to discover.
The southern bay island beaches are to be enjoyed for their peaceful tranquility, with early mornings and evenings delightful in their picture postcard beauty.
