Facilities

Toilets, shop, cafe and picnic and barbeque area near ferry.

Access

Just a 10-minute ferry ride from the mainland, leaving from Victoria Point. Island bicycle hire is available including bikes with child seats.

Walk

Easy graded 4km track around island. Walk to Melaleuca wetlands 500m along Elizabeth St or 1km along coastline. Dogs on leash permitted in some areas. Bicycles permitted. Horses prohibited.

What to see

A walk around the emerald fringe gives excellent bay views and will take you through dune wildflowers, cypress pines, Melaleuca wetlands and mangrove areas.

What to do

Walking, bird-watching, wildflower photography, dolphin watching, swimming at family friendly beaches, fishing and learning of the island’s history. 

Wildlife of interest

Bush stone-curlews are a feature of the island and there is a community count every February. After rain, various frogs can be heard, including the distinctive “bonk” of the Scarlet-sided Pobblebonk. There is also a wide diversity of forest, wetland and coastal birds that visit or are residents on the island. Fossick among the rocks in the intertidal zones and explore the mangroves and you will see a myriad of amazing sea creatures. Dugongs can occasionally be seen from high vantage points.

Plants of interest

Cypress pines Callitris columellaris are a feature of the island. The delicately perfumed native jasmine Jasminium Didymium is one of many lovely wildflowers along the shore.
