Black Swamp wetlands
This wetlands has been known as the Black Swamp since at least 1904, although the origins of the name are not known.
Swamps and wetlands weren't valued for their environmental factors in the early days. As a result, the swamp has shrunk markedly. It has been cleared and filled in for everything from farms to stock dipping reserves and rubbish dumps.
In the 1970s clearing was stepped up at the edge of the swamp for the light industrial area and aged care facilities now surrounding it.
Today the swamp is recognised as an important melaleuca wetland in the Redlands.
