Jet Ski usage
Recreational use of jet skis in Queensland has grown considerably between 2000-2005. This increased use impacts on the environment and the community through safety and noise concerns. The government introduced new laws in June 2005 to reduce impact from jet ski usage.
Some main points of the law include:
Distance off requirements - jet skis are restricted to 6 knots within 60 metres of:
- people in the water
- the shore
- the perimeter of bathing reserves
- anchored or moored vessels
- boat ramps, jetties and pontoons.
Free styling including donuts, figure 8s and 360s, wave surfing and wave jumping activities are restricted to at least 200 metres from the shore if there is a dwelling within 100 metres of the shore near where the jet ski is being operated and the operator can see the dwelling. Jets skis are essentially limited to straight line driving in narrow waterways.
The above is only an extract from the new laws. For more information visit http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/qt/msq.nsf/index/msq_pwc
