Wildlife

The Redlands is home to a variety of wildlife. The koala is the most iconic species in the Redlands and its image is used as the Council symbol.

On land, other well known iconic species in the Redlands include golden swamp wallaby, greater glider, magpie goose, glossy black cockatoo, bush stone curlew, flying fox, small dasyurid, wrens and finches, insectivorous bats, goannas and monitors.

Aquatic creatures such as wallum froglet, green tree frogs and shorebirds (waders) are also Redland residents.

Moreton Bay hosts marine life such as sea turtles, dugongs and platypus.

From June to November each year, the majestic humpback whales pass the North Gorge Headland on North Stradbroke Island as they travel from Antarctica, to their calving grounds near the Great Barrier Reef. While the calves are still quite young, they begin their southern return journey. You can view the whales passing close to the coast during those months.
