Pollution Prevention
Invite an environmental health officer to your school to talk to students about pollution issues that affect the environment in the Redlands.
Find out about the various types of pollution, what things cause pollution, how different types of pollutants affect the environment, how Council deals with pollution and ways that people can help to reduce pollution in the Redlands. Topics can be varied to suit the needs of different year levels and specific issues relevant to the class.
You can invite the Pollution Response Vehicle (PRV) to visit your school. Redland City Council’s fully equipped initial response vehicle is designed to deal with various types of pollution incidents such as oil spills, paint releases and fish kills. School activities involving the vehicle include the clean-up of a simulated chemical/oil spill that has resulted in a fish kill.
Environmental health officers can also do a desk top exercise within the classroom, demonstrating the effects of pollution on a waterway. This exercise involves a story of a river and how various land uses and activities will impact on the river.
